The best humidifiers for large bedrooms and open floors

Updated by Margot Sandoval. For anyone searching best humidifiers for bedroom with large rooms: this is that page, re-sorted for rooms over 300 square feet.

Quick answer

For a large bedroom, the Dreo HM524S from our main best humidifiers for bedroom list is still the answer: 6 liters, up to 60 hours, and Consumer Reports rates it for rooms of 300 to 599 square feet. If the bedroom opens onto the rest of the floor, step up to an evaporative console like the Levoit Superior 6000S, and accept that it is furniture. Coverage figures assume the door is shut.

What people worry about here

How big a humidifier does my bedroom need?

Match the machine to the room, which is the first thing Consumer Reports' humidifier testing lead says in their buying advice, and resist the temptation to oversize. A machine built for 600 square feet in a 120-square-foot bedroom with the door shut will push you past 50 percent and start condensing on the window. The calculator below turns your floor area into a tank size and an output band.

Will the tank last all night, and how annoying is refilling?

Any tank of 3 liters or more will run a night at a low setting; the claimed runtimes here range from 20 to 100 hours. The thing that actually decides whether you keep using it is how you fill it. Top-fill models take a jug at the bedside. Bottom-fill models mean carrying a full tank upside down to a sink, which is how humidifiers end up in cupboards in January.

What is the white dust, and how do I stop it?

It is the dissolved minerals from your tap water, dried onto your furniture. The EPA's fact sheet says several studies have shown ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers disperse minerals from the tank into the air. You have three fixes: distilled water, a demineralization cartridge, or an evaporative humidifier, which leaves the minerals in its wick.

Levoit 6.2L

Levoit 6.2L Smart Humidifier, 26 dB

Newer Levoit, not the tested Classic 300S
  • 6.2 L, up to 62 h, 536 sq ft claimed, 320 ml/h
  • 26 dB stated; detachable tray for cleaning
  • Silver-ion material claim: 99.9% for 28 days, maker says tested by an independent microbiology lab

Levoit's newer big-tank model, and on paper a slightly better Classic 300S. The silver-ion claim is the interesting one because it is the only antimicrobial claim in our data that names an outside lab, even if it does not name which.

Buy it if you want the current Levoit rather than the famous one.
Skip it if you specifically want the model RTINGS and CNN have run. See the Levoit Classic 300S.

Livatro 8L evaporative

Livatro 8L Evaporative Humidifier with UV

16 ratings; evaporative with UV
  • 8 L, 900 ml/h, 1,000 sq ft claimed, 35 h on low
  • 24 dB sleep mode stated; UV lamp plus wick
  • Target mode 40 to 80% RH, held within 5%

An interesting spec sheet: evaporative, UV, quiet, big. But a target range that goes to 80 percent is a range nobody should use. The EPA caps you at 50.

Buy it if you want a big evaporative machine and you set the target yourself.
Skip it if you want a tested model, or you would be tempted by that 80% setting. See the Superior 6000S.

What “covers 500 sq ft” is actually telling you

Coverage numbers are the least standardized figure in this category. Levoit footnotes its own: the Superior 6000S claim of 3,000 square feet is defined as raising a closed space from 30 to 60 percent over six and a half hours on a high setting. That is a useful disclosure and most brands do not make it.

Two things shrink that number in your house. An open door turns one room into several, and cold outside air strips humidity faster than a mild day. If your bedroom opens onto a hallway, size up or shut the door.

Once a bedroom opens onto the rest of the floor you are shopping for humidifiers for home use rather than for one room, and the best humidifiers for home at that scale are evaporative consoles. The room humidifiers for home that are sold as large-room ultrasonic units will not hold the number with the door open.

The opposite mistake is just as common. Consumer Reports' testing lead warns against buying a machine too big for a small room, and in a sealed bedroom an oversized unit with no humidistat is how you end up with condensation on the glass.

Work it out for your room

Tank size for your room

Bands come from the tank sizes and coverage figures in our October listing data, not from a test. Consumer Reports' advice is the same in one line: match the machine to the room.

What to add

A hygrometer that is not inside the humidifier

SMARTRO SC42 digital hygrometer

Every piece of advice on this site is a number between 30 and 50 percent. Without a second thermometer-hygrometer about three feet from the machine, you are trusting a sensor that sits in the wettest air in the room.

What to look for: A stated accuracy figure, and a display you can read from the bed.

The right wick filter, by letter

Honeywell HFT600 wicking filter T

On an evaporative humidifier the wick is the part doing the work. A crusted wick halves the output long before the machine looks dirty.

What to look for: Honeywell filters are lettered: A, C, D, E and T are not interchangeable. The HCM350B takes Filter A.

Common questions

What size humidifier do I need for my bedroom?

Work from floor area. Up to about 150 square feet, a 2 to 3 liter tank is enough. A typical 150 to 300 square foot bedroom suits 3 to 4 liters. Above 300 square feet, or with the door open to the rest of the floor, go to 6 liters or an evaporative console. Consumer Reports' testing lead makes the same point from the other direction: do not buy a machine that is too big for the room.

What humidity should I keep my bedroom at?

Between 30 and 50 percent relative humidity. The EPA's fact sheet tells you not to humidify above 50 percent because higher levels encourage biological growth. Buy a separate hygrometer and put it across the room from the machine.

Do I need distilled water in a humidifier?

If you have hard water and an ultrasonic humidifier, yes, or a demineralization cartridge instead. The EPA recommends water with low mineral content for ultrasonic and impeller units. Evaporative and steam units are far less fussy.

How often should I clean a humidifier?

Every third day, and empty and dry the tank every day you use it. That is EPA guidance, not a maker's recommendation. Scrub off scale and film, wipe dry, and rinse thoroughly if you used anything other than water.

Where should I put a humidifier in a bedroom?

On a flat surface raised at least two feet off the floor, which is Consumer Reports' advice, away from walls and wooden furniture, and not pointed at the bed. Put a tray under it if the surface is wood.
