How to clean a humidifier, the way the EPA actually recommends

Updated by Margot Sandoval. Daily, every third day, and the end-of-season job that stops it smelling next October.

Quick answer

A clean humidifier is a two-minute habit, not a weekend job. Empty and dry the tank every day you use it, and scrub it every third day. That is the EPA's recommendation for portable humidifiers, and the reason is that standing water grows microorganisms which ultrasonic machines are efficient at spraying into the room. Descale when you see white crust, rinse thoroughly after any cleaner, and store it bone dry at the end of the season.

What people worry about here

How often do I really have to clean it?

Every third day, with the tank emptied and wiped every day it is in use. That is not a brand's upsell, it is the EPA's recommendation, and the reason is that standing water grows microorganisms and ultrasonic units are efficient at spraying them into the room. Empty, scrub off any film or scale, wipe dry, refill.

What is the white dust, and how do I stop it?

It is the dissolved minerals from your tap water, dried onto your furniture. The EPA's fact sheet says several studies have shown ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers disperse minerals from the tank into the air. You have three fixes: distilled water, a demineralization cartridge, or an evaporative humidifier, which leaves the minerals in its wick.

Filters, cartridges, wicks: what is the yearly cost?

Filter-free ultrasonic machines cost nothing to run except electricity and, if your water is hard, distilled water. Evaporative machines need a wick, and the letter matters: Honeywell's filters are A, C, D, E and T and they are not interchangeable. Consumer Reports' stated reason for recommending the Honeywell HUL430B is that it has no wick, cartridge or filter to replace at all.

The routine, in five lines

  1. Every day it runsEmpty the tank, wipe the inside dry, refill with fresh water.Standing water is where microorganisms grow, and the EPA asks for a daily empty.
  2. Every third dayScrub the tank and the base with a brush. Remove scale, deposits and film. Wipe every surface dry. This is the EPA's headline recommendation for portable humidifiers.
  3. Weekly, hard waterDescale with whatever your manual specifies, then rinse thoroughly before refilling.Scale is the surface that film grows on, and it is what kills cheap machines.
  4. Monthly, evaporativeCheck the wick. Replace it when it is stiff, crusted or discolored.A clogged wick quietly halves the output while the machine looks fine.
  5. End of seasonClean it, dry every part completely, and store it dry with the tank open.A humidifier put away damp is a humidifier that smells in October.

This calendar is the EPA fact sheet turned into a schedule. The weekly descale is ours, for hard-water areas.

What changes with the type of machine

Ultrasonic

The base around the disc is where film builds. It needs a narrow brush, not a cloth. If the mist output drops, look at the disc before you blame the machine.

Evaporative

Humidifier filters are lettered, not universal, and the wick does the work and takes the mineral load. It is a consumable; a crusted wick quietly halves the output. The tray under it collects slime and benefits from the every-third-day scrub.

Warm mist and steam

Scale forms on the heating element. Descale it on the schedule your manual gives, and let the unit cool fully before you open it.

What not to do

Do not mix cleaning agents, and do not run a cleaner through without rinsing. The EPA's warning is specific: rinse the tank thoroughly so you do not release chemicals into the air. If anyone in the house develops breathing symptoms that seem tied to the humidifier, stop using it and speak to a doctor.

What to add

Brushes that reach the tank neck

Humidifier cleaning brush set

The EPA asks for a scrub every third day, and the thing that stops people doing it is the tank neck. A $10 brush set turns the job into two minutes.

What to look for: A long soft brush for the tank, a narrow one for the base channel, and nothing metal.

A descaler for hard-water scale

Scale is what film and smell grow on. If you see a white crust in the base, plain scrubbing will not shift it.

What to look for: Check your manual first: some makers specify white vinegar or citric acid only.

Distilled water, if your water is hard

Distilled water by the gallon

The EPA's advice for ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers is water with low mineral content, because those designs spray whatever is dissolved in the tank into the room.

What to look for: The label has to say distilled. Purified, spring and filtered are not the same thing.

The right wick filter, by letter

Honeywell HFT600 wicking filter T

On an evaporative humidifier the wick is the part doing the work. A crusted wick halves the output long before the machine looks dirty.

What to look for: Honeywell filters are lettered: A, C, D, E and T are not interchangeable. The HCM350B takes Filter A.

Common questions

How often should I clean a humidifier?

Every third day, and empty and dry the tank every day you use it. That is EPA guidance, not a maker's recommendation. Scrub off scale and film, wipe dry, and rinse thoroughly if you used anything other than water.

Do I need distilled water in a humidifier?

If you have hard water and an ultrasonic humidifier, yes, or a demineralization cartridge instead. The EPA recommends water with low mineral content for ultrasonic and impeller units. Evaporative and steam units are far less fussy.

What is the white dust from my humidifier?

Minerals from your tap water. The EPA says ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers disperse minerals from the tank into the air. Switch to distilled water, fit a demineralization cartridge, or move to an evaporative humidifier, which leaves the minerals in its wick.

Is a filter-free humidifier better?

Cheaper to run, not cleaner. Filter-free means ultrasonic, which is the design the EPA singles out for dispersing minerals and microorganisms from the tank. A wick costs money and captures minerals. Consumer Reports does recommend one filter-free model, the Honeywell HUL430B, specifically because nothing needs replacing.

How long should a humidifier last?

Mechanically, years. In practice they die of scale and neglect. The machines that survive are the ones that are easy to clean, which is why cleaning is weighted as heavily as runtime in our score.

Is a humidifier safe in a nursery?

Use cool mist, keep it out of reach, clean it on the EPA's three-day schedule, and keep the room under 50 percent. Anything beyond that, including whether a humidifier helps a particular child's breathing, is a question for your paediatrician rather than a shopping page.
